Independent Rear Suspension allows each wheel to move without affecting the other. The Unsprung weight is reduced a lot with the Differential weight being carried by the Frame rather than the Axle. Also inboard brakes can be used to further help the Unsprung weight. It allows far more control over the traction and suspension of the Car.
