A graphic depicting body roll with angle lines for reference

Automobiles are all about compromise. A car is usually mounted on four wheels basically one at each corner. If there were no springs and the body was mounted solid on the frame, the Body roll would be almost non existent. Unfortunately the ride would be rather harsh, the whole car itself would be bounced around as well as the occupants. The faster the car went the more difficult to control it would be. When cornering the car would skip and would require a quick steering reaction even to stay on the road.

If the car was then fitted with springs as a form of suspension the ride and comfort would be greatly improved though it would cause other problems. The main one being the way the "Body" or bulk of the car starts to behave can be a problem. As the bulk of the car is remote from the wheels separated by a spring the wheels now react to the surface of the road, and the body reacts to gravity. It does this by leaning sideways when cornering, backwards when accelrating and forwards when braking. The Shock absobers and roll bars are designed to counter this but it is a fine balance to get this right.
