Porsch 911 Turbo (3 Litre) 1975/77

From experience with the turbocharged 917 sports-racing car, Porsche chose this method of boosting power for circuit and road use, in the 911 Carrera Turbo and the road-going 3 litre 911 Turbo. To set this apart from the long lived 911 series, for a while Porsche refered to it as the 930.

For and against

The flat engines with its KKK turbocharger was not tremendously powerful, but it did have abundant torque. It also had serious turbo lag, and a tendency for wastgates to jam, and then free, which led to power surges. there was a new four-speed gearbox, because of worries that the existing unit would not cope with the torque loadings expected. A front air dam and "tea tray" rear airofoil helped curb instability in this rear engined car. Inside it was luxurious, with electrically-operated windows, functional instruments, sun roof, optional air conditioning and leather seats.

Improving

Steadily the drawbacks were overcome, turbo lag was reduced substantially while the phenomenal adhesion of large tyres helped roadholding. The car was quiet and its 15 mpg/6.4 kml acceptable in veiw of its outright performance. It gave way to the 3.3 Turbo

Impact bumpers front and rear, flared wheel arches, and pronounced aerodynamic aids were distinctive features of the 911 Turbo.
