Porsche 911S 1966/75

The 911S was the first variant to be introduced into the 911 family, announced in the Summer of 1966 as a 1967 model. Welcomed by marque enthusiasts as the first "hot" version of the 911. Enhancements ranged from vented Disc brakes to carpets instead of rubber mats.

Progress

Layout followed normal Porsche lines, with the air-cooled flat-six engine mounted behind the the rear Axle line and Torsion Bar springing. With Fuel injection, power was up to 170bhp in the 1969 model, which also had the benifit of a longer wheelbase. The Engine was bored out to 2.2 litres in 1969, 2.4 litres in 1971 and finally up to a 2.7 litre engine

Continuing Improvement

Steady evolution saw the maximum speed rise to 150mph (241 kmh) in the 2.4 litre car. which was also the first production car to be fitted with an "Air Dam" under the nose, significantly reducing aerodynamic lift. Many of the quirks of the earier Porsches had been eliminated, and generally it was a predictable, fast and comfortable car for two people.

Instant recognition feature of the 911S was the "Five-spoke" wheels.
