Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 1906/25

There is only one Silver Ghost, the 13th 40/50 built by Rolls-Royce, which is unquestionably the best known old car in the world. It dates from 1907, and was used by the company in long-distance trials untill sold in 1908. It was re-acquired in 1948 and by 1952 had been completely restored, including the silver plated fittings, and has since been used for publicity. Some 800 of these "Ghosts" were built in 1906-1925. Including 1700 at the R_R American plant.

Sound engineering

Mechanically there was nothing radical; indeed, four wheel brakes were not fitted until 1924. The engine on conservative lines, was new and made up of two cast iron blocks of three cylinders on a alloy crankcase. The key to it's silent running was the substantial crankshaft as it dampened out vibrations.

Smooth

Starting the early cars was not easy but once running the engine is quiet by modern standards, three-quarters of a century after completion. The ride too is still wholly accepable, as the springs complement the heavy chassis. This Silver Ghost is one car in the world that is beyond price

The 13th 40/50 chassis carried dignified "Roi des Belges" bodywork by coachbuilders Barker and Company, with a unique silver finish
